Using Employment Laws to Pivot After Middle Age Life Changes

As we move through different stages of life and work, things like chronic illness, caregiving, or simply wanting a change can make navigating our careers more complex, especially for those of us 40 and up.

In this workshop, we’ll walk through key employment laws that are here to protect you, and explore how they can apply to real-life situations many of us face. I’ll also share part of my own story of how I used these tools to pivot in my own career, and offer a simple framework you can use to move forward with clarity and confidence.

Whether you're managing tough circumstances or just thinking about what's next, you're not alone and you’ve got options.

About the Speaker

Benita Talati is an attorney-turned workplace advocate specializing in helping women with chronic pain and illness find ways to stay in the workforce despite health or other life challenges.  She has presented on topics such as answering illegal interview questions, “know your rights” and how to overcome “unemployment depression.” She is currently a Senior Law Clerk Lead processing FOIA requests as a contractor supporting a federal government agency building on her prior experience as a Project Attorney. To manage multiple chronic health issues, she pivoted to working in the E-discovery field as a contract attorney and Project Attorney where she served as Team Lead on numerous occasions.

Prior to working as a contract attorney, she was a pre-litigation personal injury attorney and negotiated several settlements including some six figure settlements.

A graduate of Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, she was an Associate Editor of The Journal of Practical and Clinical Law and participated in the Student Hurricane Network disaster relief by volunteering in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Prior to graduation, she completed a legal externship at the U.S. EEOC and a plaintiff’s law firm in her home state of New Jersey.  Upon graduation during the Great Recession, she was admitted to the New Jersey Bar and briefly practiced ERISA law before beginning her career in the E-discovery field.

In between attending law school and graduating with a BA in political science from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Ms. Talati earned a paralegal certificate from Middlesex County College and worked as a litigation paralegal.

She is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association and licensed in New Jersey and D.C.
